It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Kenneth Kappes on February 15, 2025. Ken was admitted to UCP Seguin’s residential CILA in September 1965. Until the day he retired, Ken was a diligent worker who held several different jobs over the years. He worked at a newspaper distribution company, placing the weekly adds in the Sunday papers. He worked at the Carr Center wiping down doorknobs and at Com Ed, cleaning the kitchen and washroom. If you were to ask Ken what his favorite job was, he would say Com Ed, due to the fact that the Com Ed employees would always leave a pot of coffee in the workroom for the UCP Seguin workers to share.
Ken liked music from the 50’s and 60’s. Elvis was his favorite. He was in awe when he was shown that music could be downloaded and played from your phone. Ken and Therese Giefer would listen to Hound Dog and Love Me Tender every time she visited.
Ken loved to visit with staff when they came to do a home visit. He would sit at the table sipping his diet pop and would want to talk about music, his family, and what happened at the day program that day. He loved to gossip and was always on top of what was happening at his day program site!
Ken looked forward every year to attending SRCA summer camp. He would often ask what week he was going to camp and who was going to be there with him. When he returned, he would say it was fun and that he was ready to go back the next year.
Ken had an infectious smile and laugh. He would always greet you with his special name for you and ask how you were. Kenny, you will be truly missed. Thank you for being such a positive, kindhearted person.
